Governor Kempthorne's Vision

Idahoans and visitors to this great state have one thing in common, a love affair with Idaho’s State Parks and vast recreational opportunities. Due to these unique qualities, Idaho has quickly become one of the most desirable places in the nation to visit, live and raise families.

As Idaho’s population expands and diversifies, a need exists within the state to adapt and create recreational areas that accommodate changing interests and growing communities. State agency’s must be proactive in promoting appreciation for Idaho’s areas of scenic beauty and rich recreational assets, while fostering atmospheres that encourage family and group interaction.

Being proactive requires the strategic development of locations that stimulate outdoor activity, assist in resource stewardship, and protect resources, while providing continued access.

Strategic development and fulfillment of the state’s current recreational need includes creating places of leisure as well as learning, that accommodate every citizen and every budget; creating places that allow individuals to enjoy lakeside views; places in which small groups can gather for special events; conferences, professional or personal rejuvenation; the creation of places for our aspiring scientists, engineers, and teachers - anyone who needs quiet time to think, to conduct research, or to communicate with one another.

I am pleased to say that there is wonderful untapped and under utilized potential to provide for these needs within Ponderosa State Park, Idaho's crown jewel.

As the Ponderosa State Park becomes more tightly woven into McCall’s suburban fabric, the park must shift emphasis from its traditional role of regional destination campground, to its emerging role as an integral recreation area in one of Idaho’s premier four-season resort communities.

Developed strategically, Ponderosa State Park will increasingly stimulate the local community, attracting more visitors to the area than ever before, while the natural resources of the park continue to be protected for the enjoyment of generations to come.

My vision is that the state of Idaho benefit from the future developments proposed within Ponderosa State Park that will expand recreational possibilities and enrich visitor experiences within the park.
