To ensure the Capitol building's long history and legacy, the Idaho Capitol Commission was appointed by Governor Phil Batt in July 1998. The mission of the Idaho Capitol Commission is to restore and preserve the Capitol to its original splendor.
Currently, workers can be seen high atop the Idaho Statehouse where they are removing the existing silver coatings on the small dome at the top of the lantern level, some 288 feet up, overlooking the Capital City.
All the layers of existing paints and coatings will be removed down to the original substrate on the small dome directly underneath the eagle. The surface of the small dome will be thoroughly cleaned and a new watertight, elastomeric coating will be applied.

Although the major restoration project was placed on hold due to projected state revenue shortfalls, Governor Kempthorne and the leaders of Idaho's Legislature are committed to preserving and protecting our Capitol Building.
